Descenders & belay devices Devices for controlled descent of kernmantel rope (abseiling or rappelling), and for protection of a climber (belaying). many devices do both, those that are limited to one function are marked accordingly. All of these devices are designed for kernmantel rope only, and must not be used on braided or laid ropes. All of these devices require training and safe working practices. It is usually mandatory for twin ropes to be used whenever abseiling is conducted in a workplace setting.

Ascenders and Rope Grabs Devices to ascend a fixed kernmantel rope. Some are based on spikes or teeth and as such are unsuitable for use in fall arrest situations. Those suitable for fall arrest are marked.
